Tahukah anda apa itu "VERBS - Base Form"

Kami akan bongkarkan dan dedahkan lebih dari 15 kegunaan BASE FORM yang anda WAJIB tahu. English anda dianggap LEMAH jika anda tidak tahu semua situasi penggunan BASE FORM ini.

Sebagai permulaan, kini didedah 4-5 lima situasi dulu. Gunakan Base Form pada semua situasi ini:

Penggunaan Base Form (Root Words)

 

Imperative Form

You can use the imperative form

• to give an order,
• to give a warning 
• to give advice, 
• to make a request  (if you use "please")

To make the imperative, use the infinitive of the verb without 'to':

• "Come here!"
• "Sit down!"

To make a negative imperative, put "do not" or "don't" before the verb:

• "Don't go!"
• "Do not walk on the grass."

use "let's" before the verb if you are including yourself in the imperative:

• "Let's stop now."
• "Let's have some lunch."

The negative of "let's" is "let's not":

• "Let's not argue!
• "Let's not tell her about it."

(1) Orders

Adults do not usually give each other orders, unless they are in a position of authority. The intonation of an order is important: each word is stressed, and the tone falls at the end of the sentence:

"Sit down now!" ('Sit', 'down' and 'now' are all stressed, and the tone falls on 'now'.)

However, adults can give orders to children and to animals:

Here are some orders you could give your pet dog:

"Come here!"
"Sit!"
"stop!"
"get out!"

(2) Warnings

You can use the imperative to warn someone of danger. All the words in the warning are stressed, but the last word has a higher tone than the first word:

"Watch out!"
"Look out!"
"Don't cross!"

(3) Advice

When you give advice using the imperative, the words are stressed normally:

• "Eat an apple – it's much better for you than a biscuit!"
• "Don't tell him you're resigning now! Wait until Monday when he's in a better mood."

You can often read articles in magazines that give advice on a subject. Sometimes, this advice is presented as "Dos and don'ts".

For example:

• Do try to sleep well the night before
• Do drink plenty of water
• Do try to walk about the plane during the flight
• Don't drink alcohol
• Don't eat heavy meals
• Don't wear restrictive clothing

(4) Requests

You can also use the imperative to make a request, but you should use a polite word before the verb:

• "Please take a seat."
• "Please wait here."
• "Please hold the line."
• "Please don't smoke here."

In written English, you might also see "Kindly" used as a polite word:

• "Kindly return the documents as soon as possible."
• "Kindly forward this to the Sales and Marketing department."
• "Kindly send me 2 copies of your brochure."

 

Giving orders and instructions

How can you ask someone to do something for you in English without sounding rude? Here are some of the ways that you can give orders and instructions.

1. Use the imperative form

We use the imperative form to give orders, warnings and advice:

Be quiet!
Take care!
Listen to me carefully!

Because it can sound rude to give direct orders (especially if you are talking to an adult), we "soften" the imperative form with "let's" or "please":

Let's go now.
Please listen to what I'm saying.

2. Use a modal verb to turn the order into a request

We use modals to change the mood of a sentence. For example, "You should help her" is more polite than "Help her!"

Other modal verbs you can use to make requests are:

Could: Could you make me some tea?
Can: Can you come here please?
Will: Will you shut the door please?
Would: Would you wait here until the doctor is ready for you?

3. Use an introductory phrase to soften the order

Instead of using an imperative, you can use a phrase instead. Here are some common ways of phrasing an order, in order of the most indirect to the most direct:

Would you mind possibly… (+ ing) (Most indirect)
Would you mind possibly moving your car? It's parked right in front of mine.

I was hoping you could … (+ infinitive without to)
I was hoping you could spare me a few minutes this morning.

Do you think you could … (+ infinitive without to)
Do you think you could do this photocopying for me?

I'd like you to…

I'd like you to file this correspondence for me.

I want you to…
I want you to finish this by tomorrow.

4. Use sequencing words

You can use sequencing words to make instructions clear.

Firstly, make sure the appliance is disconnected.
Secondly, open the back with a screwdriver.
Then, carefully pull out the two black cables….

Today I am going to tell you how to make the best sandwich in the world. 

First, you must roast a chicken and slice it into thick pieces. Then toast your favourite bread (two slices).  

After that you need to put mayonnaise and mustard on the toast and then the chicken slices.  Next you are going to add your vegetables.  Tomatoes, lettuce  onions, cucumbers etc.  

Finally put a couple slices of cheese on the sandwich and then close it with the other piece of toast.
